Alexander Gets on Board with World AIDS Day Campaign

World Aids Day Bus

Local MP Douglas Alexander boarded the campaign bus to help raise awareness and help combat the spread of HIV and AIDS this week in Parliament.

Showing support for World AIDS day Douglas Alexander met with members of the national campaign who have been organising events across the UK to promote understanding about the spread of AIDS and HIV. The campaign aims to educate people about the risks of contracting HIV, tackle the existing prejudices surrounding AIDS and encourage people to fundraise for the charity.

Douglas Alexander said:

“Many local people in Paisley and across Renfrewshire are concerned about the global spread of HIV and AIDS.  As former Secretary of State for International Development I have seen the devastating effects the spread HIV and AIDS has on families and communities.

“While I am proud of Labour’s leadership in tackling this global scourge it is crucial that we continue to make eradicating HIV and AIDS a priority.

“With 33 million people still living with HIV worldwide, action now is vital if we are to make a real difference. No one country can hope to tackle the spread of HIV and AIDS alone - that is why international leadership is more important than ever

“Despite the progress we have seen, around the world millions of people are living with HIV and more than a million people still die from AIDS-related illnesses every year.

“The progress made is encouraging and shows that we can make a real impact but we have to keep the momentum up to raise awareness, ensure universal access to treatment and to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS. One vital way the government must do that is to continue the UK’s strong support for the Global Fund to fight Aids Tuberculosis and Malaria which has already made a real difference.

“In government, Labour made sure that the UK was at the centre of efforts to tackle HIV and AIDS and we are calling on the new government to continue that leadership”
