Alexander shows his hand and pledges solidarity with Burmese political prisoners.

Burma Campaign Local MP Douglas Alexander showed joined Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary in showing solidarity with Burmese political prisoners following the Burmese election this week.

Local MP Douglas Alexander said

“Following the Burmese elections I want to show my support for those political prisoners who are unfairly imprisoned purely for speaking out against an unjust regime”

“As a Member of Parliament, I am grateful that we have a democratic system of fair and free elections and while we might not always agree with the outcome we should br grateful that people can express their political opinions without fear of reprisal. I am humbled that the people of Paisley and Renfrewshire have put their trust in me and am honoured to be accountable to them.

“The elections in Burma were sadly not conducted freely or fairly and the Burmese people have been denied democratic representation.

“We must remember the many Burmese MPs who were democratically elected in 1990 are now dead, in prison or in exile. We must not forget them and I would encourage everyone to visit the Amnesty International website and show their support for the campaign.

“Amnesty International is doing a great job to keep the pressure up and I am proud to be able to do my part to support them and the people of Burma”

Shadow Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper added.

“The people of Burma continue to have their basis human rights denied by a brutal dictatorship. These elections could have been a turning point for Burma. Instead the military junta has suppressed opposition parties and imprisoned 2,200 political prisoners, including Aung Sung Suu Kyi.

“It is vital that people across the world show their support for Aung Sung Suu Kyi and all the people of Burma.

“I am calling on the Burmese regime to release Aung Sung Suu Kyi, along with the 2,200 other political prisoners in Burma, without imposing any restrictions on their rights.”
