Johnstone politicians Douglas Alexander and Hugh Henry came together last week to campaign to save the town’s “Advice Works” centre.
The Collier Street centre which provides information and advice to Renfrewshire residents on all issues regarding benefits and debts is under threat from a Renfrewshire Council review of the service.
MP Douglas said: “I have now been approached by both Council employees and independent agencies and warned of the real threat to the Collier Street Centre.
“In these tough economic times, the Collier Street Centre helps hundreds of Johnstone residents get the cash to which they’re entitled.”
“I know both how needed and valued the centre is by Johnstone residents.
As Johnstone’s MP I have now written to the Leader of the SNP led Council demanding he lift the closure threat over this important Collier Street Centre.
“The town is already reeling from the SNP led Council’s closure of the town’s nursery, public toilets, and their decision to close the town centre swimming pool. Enough is Enough!”
Hugh Henry said: I know how important good benefit advice is. In the present economic climate we should be thinking of expanding this service, not cutting back. Advice Works provides an invaluable service to Johnstone and the surrounding areas. It would be an absolute disgrace if the Council closes the service.
What has Renfrewshire Council got against Johnstone? Why are SNP councilliors inflicting yet more cuts? Let them show some decency and common sense.
