Unemployment Figures for December

Unemployment Figures - Douglas calls for Scottish and UK Governments To Act To Tackle “JOBS CRISIS”

Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP, Douglas Alexander, has called on the Scottish and UK Governments to “get a grip” and “take action” to tackle unemployment in the area following new jobs figures released today (Wednesday 23/01/13).

The statistics show that unemployment in Paisley and Renfrewshire South constituency remains stubbornly high, with 3,027 people claiming Job Seekers Allowance in December 2012. This means 5.5% of people in our area claiming out of work benefits, which is considerably higher than the Scottish average of 3.9%.

The figures for long term unemployment show that 910 people in Paisley and Renfrewshire South constituency had been out of work for more than a year in December 2012 – a 47% increase on the same period a year before.

The figures also show that the rate of youth unemployment across Renfrewshire local authority area is also above the Scottish average, at 8.3% compared to 7%.

Responding to the figures, Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP Douglas Alexander said:

“These figures paint a bleak picture for jobs in our local area. Behind every single one of these figures is someone desperate to get into work and a family struggling to pay the bills.

“Our overall unemployment rate and youth unemployment rate are both higher than the Scottish average.

“Both the Scottish and UK Governments are ignoring the jobs crisis facing local people. They need to get a grip and start working together. We need a plan to grow our economy and bring in real investment to create new jobs. That’s why Labour’s plan for a compulsory jobs guarantee for the long term unemployed is so important. It needs to happen right now because we cannot afford to wait.”
